If you love wordplay, the creative process, or heartwarming letters between friends then you’ve landed in the right place. Here’s our story…
Over the course of our almost 30-year friendship we’ve shared travel, food, family, silliness, despair, hopes, fears, political action, reading, and writing. Within all this life, there is a true love of words and play – especially wordplay! So of course we joined the Wordle craze, and ended up creating something more, a something more we’d like to share.
On August 22nd 2022, Heather completed the Wordle. in a moment of whimsy, she wrote a silly sentence to Georg’ann using the Wordle words. A few days later Georg’ann sent Heather a silly sentence in the same format.
From August 28th, 2022 we have been in a daily practice of starting our days with Wordle and some bit of writing, only very occasionally missing. Little amusements tapped out on our phones and sent as text messages. We created a rhythm and a structure, and within those bounds began a creative practice. Over the past year, our writing has shifted…going from simple silliness to something that is occasionally worthwhile craft without ever being crafted. Microfictions and poems, sometimes a proverb.
The outcome of a simple word play has become a mindfulness practice, a deepening of connection to ourselves, to life, and certainly to our friendship. There is unguarded sharing without any pressure to be profound.
We’ve been asked if we now strive to pick words that will somehow serve a particular notion of writing. The answer is a resounding “No”. Wordle is as Wordle does, we cannot force the game to be anything but what it is. Sometimes it deals a lousy set of words! From which often comes some of the best writing, the most honest and creative expressions of what is within.
Each day we share with our spouses, and Heather with her daughter, and occasionally with other friends. Somewhere in the year, the idea came that what we were doing might be of interest to others. Maybe an essay on friendship & form, daily habits of connection & creative practice. Perhaps as a writing prompt and practice that would be of value to writers. And maybe, just maybe, there is an audience for the outcome of our process – the writings themselves.
So, we’re taking our wordplay out into the open with our writings – available for you or anyone to get on a daily basis or just to dip into occasionally. It’s our bit of joy to share. We hope you enjoy what we write, and maybe be inspired to try this practice yourselves.
