ROACH

Scattered ABOUT the snowy yard, life
in search of life abounds:
dark-eyed juncos scratch to find
a HOARD of seeds, while starlings
twine around a bare branch,
and finches flutter, jockeying for position.
Hawk lands, birds scatter –
feathers ROACH up, signaling alarm,
leaving the hawk alone in a
now empty yard.

Towhead preschooler is fed
a ROACH, pungent smoke
dissipates. Dark, dank here
at the base. Redwoods go up, up
Straight, sturdy. Ancient.
Tufts of graceful green found light.
